@thepottymouthguru: You’ve done the therapy. Read the books. Figured out your attachment style. You can practically give a TED Talk on why you do the shit you do. 🫠 But then something happens in your relationship, you get triggered, and there you are doing the SAME fucking thing you swore you were working on. And afterward? You know exactly what went wrong. Here’s something I want more people to understand: Knowing why you do something doesn’t automatically teach you how to do it differently. Recognizing your patterns is valuable. But changing them also takes skills, practice, and learning what to do when those familiar reactions show up. And YES, you can learn. I want to start talking a lot more about the HOW. The actual, practical stuff that helps you move from understanding yourself to responding differently in real life. Because you deserve more than another explanation of why you’re struggling. You deserve to know what to DO about it. ❤️🤟🏻🌿 Tell me: What’s one pattern you understand the hell out of but still struggle to change? #TherapyTok #AttachmentStyles #EmotionalRegulation
Me!! It’s so frustrating. I need to get the skill sets to change behavior! You are amazing btw!

Long time listener, First time caller:
I have a habit of getting defensive of my actions, and retreating from the conflict, which causes my husband to feel abandoned and start chasing me.
I've been to therapy, consumed months' worth of online content like yours, learned a lot of my behaviours and how to recognize them. I can usually dissect the source of the behaviour and where I detoured afterwards.
but none of that changes the behaviour, or helps me stop it any better the next time.

I liken it to knowing I have adhd, knowing what challenges that brings, understanding why I struggle with executive function and task paralysis, knowing what I should do to make things easier, but still struggling 95% of the time to make it happen.
Thankfully, I have successfully conquered my attachment wounds and no longer feel attacked or defensive. I struggle a bit with betrayal trauma, but that is fairly new, and a work in progress. Still I am miles ahead of where I ever hoped to be.

So about 30% of the time, I am not successful when he gets defensive at staying calm when he can’t see his patterns and he turns it around on me. Sometimes I can stay completely calm but other times I cannot it’s so frustrating to me! And if he walks away, I still chase… I’m working on it! I know part of it has to do with feeling alone, currently about to go on a birthday trip by myself… practicing being OK being alone!

Blame. I had a very critical mother. My mother in law is controlling and critical, and we do not like each other. Years of trauma from that because my husband has never stuck up for me and prioritizes his mom, she is becoming a nuisance because he won’t set boundaries. I tend to blame all of them for my hurt, (which is justified) and I am having a hard time letting go of the past and ruminate over my fears of the future. thinking my MIL will take over our lives. I am in therapy working on this, but I’m having a very difficult time. In the past I would get flooded and shut down, or on the flip side, when I start talking it comes out like word vomit and I lose my shit. at least we have begun taking about it, it’s easier to be angry and shut down than hurt and disappointed.

please, mentioning the problem is great but where is the solution? where are the skills? please don't be one of those therapists on tik tok that mentions the problems but never gives the solution.

I really struggle knowing I’m an anxious attacher but I can’t seem to stop letting my anxious thoughts run away with my whole nervous system when I’m activated. 🫤

Reacting to frustration from another person, I get so butt hurt and avoidant (Sometimes I physically can't speak louder, I struggle to reach even if I want to). I fear anger like the plague. I'm aware it has do with self-confidence, autonomy and most of all for me self-trust.

I’m curious… how many of you have done YEARS of work on yourselves but still find yourselves thinking, “I know WHY I do this, but how the HECK do I actually stop?” 👇

🚩See licensed healthcare professionals. You learn the skills in therapy; it’s not just understanding. “You’ve done therapy” is painfully common misinformation that puts people in harms way.
