The germs feed on the spit, multiply and stick to the inside, the lid, the seal and the straw as a slimy film. In 3 studies of bottles people were drinking from, 64% to 78% held more bacteria than the limit for drinking water. In the one that tested school kids' bottles, 9% had faecal bacteria in the water.
