Virginia's most powerful Democrat surrendered to agents this morning on a federal indictment unsealed today. The named player is state senator Louise Lucas, eighty-two, president pro tempore of the Virginia Senate and chair of its finance committee. Prosecutors allege she led the Lucas Enterprise, a criminal marijuana operation run with family members, and used her office to protect it. She faces five of eight counts, including racketeering, marijuana distribution, and money laundering conspiracies. First, prosecutors say the enterprise ran since twenty nineteen and moved more than one hundred kilograms of marijuana. Second, they put it at four and a half million dollars, around a Portsmouth shop she opened with her daughter in twenty twenty-one. Third, agents searched her office and that shop back in May. Then came the bombshell. Prosecutors say a wiretap caught her calling a license her last chance at generational wealth. She denies it, saying she is not stopping now. The attorney general calls the timing proper: she is not on the ballot, with the midterms twelve days away. These are charges, not convictions. Share this report and watch part two.
