LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT HELPS ⬇️⬇️ Anxiety is an emotion and like every emotion, it carries information. It may be responding to uncertainty, rejection, conflict or the possibility of making the “wrong” choice. Sometimes it’s connected to what is happening now, and sometimes it’s responding to what your nervous system learned to expect from past experiences. But when anxiety feels uncomfortable, we often skip over understanding it and move immediately into trying to control it. We overthink, overprepare, seek reassurance, avoid, rush, people-please or try to predict every possible outcome. These are protective impulses: the automatic urges your nervous system believes will reduce discomfort or keep you safe. They can also help you understand which nervous system state you may be functioning from. The impulse to argue, defend or force a solution may point toward fight. The impulse to rush, fix, overthink or escape may point toward flight. The impulse to avoid, shut down or become unable to act may point toward freeze. The impulse to appease, overexplain or manage someone else’s reaction may point toward fawn. These aren’t rigid categories, but noticing the impulse gives you somewhere to begin. The problem is that following it often brings temporary relief. Your brain learns: *I felt anxious, I gained control, and then I felt safer.* So the next time anxiety appears, the urge becomes even more convincing. Moving beyond anxiety management means pausing long enough to ask: What am I feeling in my body? What am I afraid might happen? What is my immediate impulse? What state might I be functioning from? What kind of support would actually meet me here? Fight may need safe expression or movement. Flight may need grounding and fewer demands. Freeze may need warmth, gentle movement and a small step forward. Fawn may need space to reconnect with your own feelings, needs and boundaries. The purpose isn’t to label yourself perfectly or make anxiety disappear. It’s to understand how anxiety moves through your nervous system so you can support what you’re experiencing without automatically letting the protective impulse decide what happens next. That is how we begin changing the pattern not by never feeling anxious, but by building the capacity to stay connected to ourselves while we do. #nervoussystemregulation #highfunctioninganxiety #patterns #impulse #nervoussystem
