54_YEAR OLD KENYATTA MARRIES 18_YEAR OLD NGINA Jomo Kenyatta married Ngina Muhoho, later known as Mama Ngina, in 1951 under Kikuyu customary law when she was eighteen years old, having been born on 24 June 1933 to Chief Muhoho wa Gathecha and Anne Nyokabi in Ngenda, Kiambu. Kenyatta, born around 1897 and thus approximately fifty-four at the time, took her as his fourth wife after prior unions with Grace Wahu, Edna Clarke and Grace Wanjiku. The couple met in the early 1950s at Githunguri Teachers Training College in Kiambu, where he served as principal and she studied; the politically advantageous match linked him to her influential chiefly family. Shortly after the wedding Kenyatta was arrested in October 1952 amid the Mau Mau emergency, and Ngina, already pregnant with their first child Christine Wambui, supported him through imprisonment and later exile in Lodwar and Maralal. They had four children together, including future president Uhuru Kenyatta, and she later became Kenya’s first First Lady upon independence.
