🌳 Cutting a limb off flush with the trunk is one of the most common pruning mistakes we see. It looks clean. It's actually the cut that hurts the tree most. A flush cut removes the branch collar, that slightly swollen ring where the limb meets the trunk. The collar is how a tree seals off a wound. Take it away and the tree can't heal, so rot and pests move right in. Leave a long stub instead and it just dies back and rots. Here's the three-cut method that protects the tree: ✓ Cut 1: Undercut about one third of the way through the limb, roughly 12 inches out from the trunk. This stops the bark from tearing down the trunk. ✓ Cut 2: Cut from the top, a little farther out. The limb drops clean. ✓ Cut 3: Make the final cut just outside the branch collar, never flush against the trunk. Late fall and winter is a good window for pruning in the Hill Country, and it's the safer time for oaks. Skip the wound paint on most trees. The collar does the healing.
