@prepare2swim: New parents — this is the shortcut. The earliest foundation for a survival swimmer starts far earlier than most people think. Between 4–6 months, children can begin responding to a verbal cue before going under — in a way that’s calm, controlled, and developmentally appropriate. These early exposures are tiny. Your first forward submersions involve less water than a simple cup pour. When this work is layered naturally into early development — just like tummy time or sitting — water stays neutral. Familiar. Non-threatening. When this window is missed, things get harder. And when water becomes a negative experience, rebuilding trust becomes an uphill battle. If you have a toddler, this still applies. Fearful toddler? Too much time in a puddle jumper? This is still the shortcut. Until a child’s nervous system can tolerate water calmly, learning cannot occur. My book is the perfect gift for a new or expecting parent.
