Well Mexican is a nationality. So yeah you're not Mexican if you weren't born there. BUT what you can say is you're of Mexican decent if you have family from there.

Non Mexican citizen, lived in Mexico, still go to Mexico often, speak the language, mexican ancestry, keep up with mexican politics, celebrate mexican traditions. While I agree that theres certain people that are diehard Americans of mexican decent there are many that are mexican due to ancestry and cultural upbringing. For example my mom does tell us we are American by nationality, but Mexicans by every other account. I could get mexican citizenship rn if I wanted.

Being a brown Mexican-American who barely speaks Spanish is genuinely a real struggle I deal with in my daily life. People always assume I speak Spanish and when they realize I’m not fluent they get mad at me and then there’s some white people who look at me like I don’t know a lick of English meanwhile I barely know any Spanish. It just sucks dealing with racism on both sides 😔
