Last time I took my cat to a vet, he would NOT go in his crate. He did happily go into a cardboard box, so that was his crate instead

It's easier to back cats into a carrier than to put them in head first.

The best trick I learned to get my cats in the carrier: put the carrier on something higher (for example table). The opening of the carrier must be over the table so the cat can’t reach anything other then the carrier itself 💕

Dom might have thought you were taking him back to stay. That sweet baby. 💕 He will soon learn that he is safe.

not the best, but the front load only carriers and cats that dont want to go in... I've set them so the opening is facing ceiling, and then i "drop" them in from above (gently of course)

Dom clearly has an association with the crate. My babies did, too, and it’s just taken some time to get them accustomed to the idea that going away doesn’t mean going back to the shelter. Poor sweet little man. 🥺

for the hard ones, I always set the cage on its short end, cage door directly up and set them in feet first.

I think the reason why at first dom didn't want to go in is because you probably thought you were gonna go give him back to the shelter again, which that would be just miserable. Because he looks like the sweetest boy ever

It’s easier to put them in from above. Set the carrier so the door is facing the ceiling, then pick him up and kind of just fold him in. Hold his front legs so he can’t block his way, and just set him in head first. Make sure the carrier is stable, set it between two or three things that are heavy. I hope this makes sense.

sometimes standing the carrier on its end, scuffing and "dropping" is easier...

I know a lot of comments are saying put the carrier vertically but ive had success with having the carrier at the edge of an elevated surface (table, cat tree, etc.) and I put them in head first. they cant back up because there's no floor beneath the carrier. hope that made sense and good luck! :)

When I can’t get my cat in the carrier I put it so the opening is facing the ceiling and lower him in, close it and gently lower it back to the ground he can adjust his body. Works like a charm every time

I watched the vet load my cat by putting the carrier turned up and down and she placed him just by putting him down, put the door on and then slowly turned it back to normal. It was the easiest process ever of getting him in the crate. I swear by this method now!
