𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘆𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗮 (አሲዮ ቤሌማ) is a celebrated album by the pioneer of Ethio-jazz, 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘂 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗸𝗲, released in 1994 (1987E.C). 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗢𝗺𝗲𝗴𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲, 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱, 𝗨𝗦𝗔, the album serves as a rich bridge between traditional Ethiopian folk melodies and complex, sophisticated jazz, funk, and soul arrangements. The album features a compelling blend of new compositions, reimagined Ethio-jazz staples, and Mulatu's unique interpretive takes on traditional Ethiopian regional songs. It showcases his signature mastery of the vibraphone and percussion, fusing pentatonic Ethiopian scales with western jazz instrumentation, modal harmonies, and syncopated grooves. While track counts can vary slightly across different cassette and CD releases, the album typically features 10 songs, including: • 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘆𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗮 by 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗮 𝗜𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗵𝗶𝗺 & 𝗧𝗲𝗼𝗱𝗿𝗼𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲 – The title track, establishing a hypnotic, rhythm-driven groove that highlights traditional vocal stylings and brass harmonies. • 𝗬𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝘄 – One of Mulatu’s most timeless and beloved compositions (famously also featured in Jim Jarmusch’s film Broken Flowers), known for its melancholic yet soothing modal beauty. • 𝗘 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗮 • 𝗬𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗯-𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘆-𝗜𝘀𝗮𝘁 • 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 by 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗸𝘂– A piece drawing heavily from the traditional musical heritage of the Wello region. • 𝗧𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗮 by 𝗧𝗲𝗼𝗱𝗿𝗼𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲 • 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘂'𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗼𝗱 – A showcase of his improvisational jazz sensibilities and relaxed, atmospheric phrasing. Coming out during a decade when global interest in world music was expanding, Assiyo Bellema represents an important chapter in Mulatu Astatke’s discography, arriving just a few years before the massive global resurgence sparked by the Éthiopiques CD series. It remains a treasured release for collectors and aficionados of Ethio-jazz, offering a smooth, deeply atmospheric window into Mulatu's cross-cultural musical explorations. The original release was issued on CD by 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗼-𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 in the US, with cassette releases distributed locally in Ethiopia by prominent music distributors like 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽 and 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽. #music #foryou #fypシ #fyp #habeshatiktok
