Styx, the American rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1972, is known for blending melodic hard rock guitar with acoustic guitar, synthesizers mixed with acoustic piano, upbeat tracks with power ballads, and incorporating elements of international musical theatre. The original line-up included Dennis DeYoung, James "J.Y." Young, John "J.C." Curulewski, and brothers Chuck and John Panozzo. Their debut, Styx, was in 1972, and they released an album almost every year throughout the 1970s. Styx II (1973) featured the hit "Lady," which reached No. 6 in the US and also charted in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Equinox (1975) and Crystal Ball (1976) both reached the US top 70; Crystal Ball was the first album with Tommy Shaw, who replaced Curulewski. Styx's commercial breakthrough in North America came with The Grand Illusion (1977), which peaked at No. 6 in both the US and Canada and became the first of four consecutive multi-platinum albums. It featured "Come Sail Away," a top 10 hit. Pieces of Eight (1978) was another No. 6 hit in the US, with "Renegade" and "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" reaching the top 10 in Canada. In 1979, Cornerstone went to No. 2 in both countries, thanks to the No. 1 ballad "Babe," which also propelled the album to success in Australia and New Zealand. "Babe" was a No. 6 hit in the UK. In 1981, Styx's Paradise Theatre was a No. 1 album in the US and Canada, and also reached the top 10 in Scandinavia and the UK. "The Best of Times" from the album reached No. 1 in Canada and No. 3 in the US. Kilroy Was Here (1983) was their last major hit album, reaching the top 3 in North America. Its lead single, "Mr. Roboto," became their third chart-topper in Canada and a No. 3 hit in the US. After a six-year break, Styx returned with Edge of the Century (1990), which featured "Show Me the Way," a top 3 hit in North America. Overall, Styx had eight songs hit the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and 16 top 40 singles. Seven of their eight top 10 singles were written and sung by founding member Dennis DeYoung. Styx sold over 20 million records for A&M between 1975 and 1984. #Styx #RockBand #MusicHistory #ClassicRock #onthisday
