@browneyedgurl801: Across the savannas of southern Africa, outside temperatures swing from scorching 40°C (104°F) afternoons to freezing 2°C nights — yet inside a towering clay termite mound, the insects keep their fungus gardens at a steady 30.5°C within one degree all year long. When architect Mick Pearce and structural engineers at Arup designed the 360,000-square-foot Eastgate Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, they ditched conventional mechanical air-conditioning systems entirely and modeled the building on a Macrotermes termite mound. Deep bristling concrete overhangs and small recessed windows prevent direct tropical sunlight from hitting the glass, while the building’s thick precast concrete floors act as a giant thermal sponge. During the workday, heat generated by 2,000 office workers and computers is absorbed into hollow labyrinth channels cast inside the concrete floor slabs and vented upward through 48 rooftop masonry chimneys. At night, cool mountain air is flushed through those hollow floor mazes, chilling the concrete structure so it stays comfortably cool the next afternoon — using 90% less ventilation energy than neighboring glass towers. #EngineeringFacts #Zimbabwe #Biomimicry #SustainableArchitecture #Arup

mktrades7 :
From what I’ve read, temps inside can reach 87 degrees. While that’s cooler than outside temperatures, that hardly a comfortable office working environment.
