They were both such incredible people. She did him such beautiful justice. He did us all such beautiful justice. Thank you for sharing this.

If you’ve never read Baldwin’s foreward of Lorraine Hansberry’s “Young Gifted and Black” this reads very similarly. Baldwin is eulogizing Hansberry in the way Morrison eulogizes him here. It’s beautiful.

She wrote him a sermon...a homily ordered by the heavens, edited by her spirit of everlasting love and gratitude. I have it printed in poster size on my wall. Occasionally a visitor my take the 5 minutes or so to read it through. Lucky them.

I didn’t know this existed and I’m in awe. I want to be this clear in my words— both of them, in both ways.

To have someone feel this deeply about you. In a way that feels like each sentence is unwrapping a gift.

I have to say your recitation and your tenderness and reverence for these words deep enough to share them with others so intently really is something. a really accessible and starkly human vehicle to have experienced these words for the first time. first thanks for that, seriously. To me, i was left with the impression that the precision and care and stewardship of the task Morrison undertook that you highlight feels, above all, like it may have been no effort at all. Not in the sense of its profundity, logistical alterations or emotional weight, but that the words must have poured out as if the most natural thing in the universe, as if the time spent between them on this plane resonated in its creation, as if his imprint on her, their imprints on each other, made this piece some sort of preternatural collaboration of their minds and hearts, language just being the vehicle most able to carry it forward. Like it was written the way a stream carves a bank rather than the way an engineer builds and aqueduct. Somehow it’s is deeply academic, surely intellectual in execution but with the simple timbre of a lullaby or a fable. I’m, really fkn in awe , jeez

James Baldwin was a spiritually unworldly gift. Listen to his interviews and lectures, in addition to reading his writings. Baldwin was pure humanity.

I come back to “You knew, didn't you, how I loved your love? You knew. This then is no calamity. No. This is jubilee.” all of the time 🥲
