Body language. Some people are more sensitive to the body language of others. With sharks their displays and gestures are mostly very subtle, however some like this series are clearly more overt. It is fascinating to watch sharks interacting with one another and other species. Their swim patterns and exaggerated body movements will often evoke a change in position and movement from another individual. These conversations are imperative for maintaining clear communication for a social hierarchy which can help to keep peace in almost any social group. Communication is key, and large predatory shark species have evolved to be so attuned to reading and responding to the body language and movements of other fellow predators and potential prey items in order to successfully predate. Some of the theories on why the rare bites happen may be due to: -Mistaken identity (a shark mistaking a human for an injured dead/dying animal/natural prey item or run into them which hunting natural prey.) -Starvation (any animal, including humans, maybe be willing to eat something they normally would not if they are on the brink of starvation.) -Territorial disputes (threat displays like this jaw pop and head snap may be a sign of frustration or a challenge for territory.) It is best to back away slowly and give a shark space if you see a display like this. -Curiosity (a dead animal may be nearby and they are exploring nearby things as they search for it, or the behavior of the human is keeping the sharks attention.) —- Despite all of this sharks rarely make a mistake (Fewer than 10 people die every year from a shark bite) or resort to physical interactions with one another or humans, however being sensitive to your surroundings: environmental conditions, nearby activities, and the behavior of sharks and other animals can help to avoid adverse interactions.
