Well, this is an interesting way to prepare for a surveillance ban. Vermont’s ban on automated license plate readers takes effect July 1, 2027. Manchester’s Flock contract expires in March. Police Chief James Blanchard is already exploring replacements. APPARENTLY, THE CAMERAS MAY GO, BUT THE DESIRE TO KEEP THEIR CAPABILITIES ISN’T GOING ANYWHERE. At Tuesday’s Selectboard meeting, Blanchard discussed cameras that could store footage on town-owned equipment instead of a vendor’s cloud. Local storage might improve data security. BUT HERE’S THE PART THAT MATTERS. Vermont is banning automated plate-reading systems, not just cloud storage. Moving recordings onto a municipal server doesn’t magically legalize technology that performs the same prohibited function. SAME SURVEILLANCE. DIFFERENT HARD DRIVE. SAME LEGAL QUESTION. Blanchard says the technology assists investigations and missing-person searches. Those are legitimate concerns. He’s also seeking state guidance before choosing a replacement. Good. Because the town already paused its Flock cameras once while reviewing whether they complied with existing law, then returned them to service. SO BEFORE TAXPAYERS FINANCE A REBRANDED VERSION, LET’S SEE THE DETAILS. Will the new cameras automatically identify and index plates? How long will footage be kept? Who gets access? Can outside agencies search it? And who independently confirms the system complies with Vermont law? A SURVEILLANCE BAN SHOULD NOT BECOME A SHOPPING LIST FOR SURVEILLANCE 2.0. Manchester has not approved a replacement. Researching lawful options isn’t misconduct. But residents deserve answers BEFORE the equipment is purchased, not after it’s installed. PUBLIC SAFETY MATTERS. SO DOES THE RIGHT TO KNOW HOW GOVERNMENT WATCHES THE PUBLIC. #vermontnews #manchestervermont #privacyrights #policeaccountability #newenglandunfiltered
