Eleven years ago, ahead of Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election, former President Goodluck Jonathan assured Al Jazeera in an interview that he would peacefully relinquish power if he lost the election. He kept that promise. Following his defeat by the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Jonathan conceded and oversaw a peaceful transfer of power, setting a historic example for Nigeria’s democracy. However, presidential elections held since 2015 have been followed by legal battles, with the outcomes of the 2019 and 2023 elections challenged in court and subsequently upheld by the judiciary. This recurring trend has continued to raise concerns among political analysts about electoral credibility, public confidence, and the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process. Eleven years later, the question remains: Can Nigeria conduct a presidential election whose outcome is widely accepted without prolonged legal disputes? 🎥 Video Credit: Al Jazeera #GoodluckJonathan #Buhari #Tinubu #NigerianDemocracy #lionscrib
