I have THOUSANDS of photos from when I first started surfing in San Juan, La Union ❤️. These are just random photos that I found on my phone today. I don’t know if many people know, but my journey started in La Union, because as a college kid from Manila, it was the closest place that I knew of that had surf. @sanjuansurflaunion became my home base, and Surf Camp family my surf family. I was lucky to be “adopted” by Daddy Bri and the rest, and knowing they were looking after me while I was away - made my parents feel confident and let me go for longer periods of time for a surf trip. Weekends became weeklong trips, then months. At some point I thought I was going to end up in La Union for the rest of my life but life had other plans and now I am in Siargao. BUT I will always look fondly back on the memories I have there and be grateful for the people (especially the locals) and all the surfing lessons I had there, especially when I started as a teenager. I never understand the division or separation or difference made by other people here in Siargao when they find out that someone started surfing or learning in La Union. (Yes I have met those kind of people and have heard comments). Learning or starting to surf in one specific place doesn’t make one surfer better than another, nor one student more worth teaching than another. Everybody starts SOMEWHERE and what matters is that you love surfing and bring the humility and lessons that you’ve learned wherever you go. Learning how to surf and your surfing journey is not and will not ever be linear. Each place, each lesson and each person will change you and teach you. You / we never stop learning. We never stop evolving - as people and as surfers. All I know is I am grateful for where I am now and I am also infinitely grateful for where I came from. Look how far we’ve all gone. ❤️ La Union will always be another home away from home and will always be in my heart. I am 100% sure that LU is the birthplace of many many surfers in the Philippines. LU paved the way for so many surf spots and events in the Philippines today.❤️ Will probably share a hundred more throwback photos and videos next time time haha
