@arinzewrld: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DEITIES IN ENUGU EZIKE. Nearly every village or community in Enugu Ezike has a deity or oracle. Some communities have more than one deity such as Igogoro where UGWU EZUGWU ETTE and EZE NOKPE hold sway. In addition, a number of communities have the dreaded ADERE of Ero, Ngwu Ufodo, Ohe Imufu, Akpal' Ọcha, Lawu Lawu Umachi and several other deities installed to protect them from both human and spiritual troubles. The deities themselves exert tribute and inflict retribution upon wrongdoers. Those suspected of committing heinous crimes such as murder of a kinsman, stealing, adultery, poisoning of another or other horrifying offenses are asked to swear before the deity or oracle of the community. Individuals or communities suffering serious set back are usually advised to investigate through a seer to find out which of the oracle is used by the gods to punish such Community for their past wrongdoings or that of an individual member. The oracles are protective of the communities where they are located especially during the dark days of slavery and slave trade. The oracles were invoked to punish the kidnappers of a compatriot. By so doing, the kidnappers would hurriedly return their victims. Once an Oracle is invoked over a case of a wrongdoings, the doer usually owned up and atoned for his offenses to avert horrible spiritual consequences sooner or later. The Oracles served judicial functions too and were known also as the final arbitrator and judge over any issue in the community. Such matters as contest over land ownership, stealing, denial of indebtedness by a debtor, adult.ery, poiso.ning, mur.der and even mansla.ughter etc were decisively settled when the accused or defendant swore by any of the Oracles as testimony of his or her innocence. In the case of mur.der and mansla.ughter which were not given separate legal definition, such Aru (atrocities) were handled by the community whether Oracle makes a contrary recommendation or not. Enugu Ezike needed the deities at the period in question. They protected the rich and the poor, young and old as well as the weak and the orphan. Their greatest disadvantage was that their protection usually cost their clients an arm and a leg. They made terrible demands from all including the gift by the client of every cherished valuable such as a daughter, a plot of land, the first farm produce of the year and so on... All the ATTAMAS of these deities swim in opulence because they command the greatest known authority and respect. Even today, there is the fear of the deity which is more powerful than the fear of government. For instance, one may lie to a judge in a law court where there is no spiritual punishment but not before the deity. Which of the deities have you heard of?
