I am calling it this company is using the spirits as energy/weapons and Korra came in to stop it but it spiraled out of control because they were using too much and the spirit world was unbalanced because of this company actions.

My gut feeling is that Korra wasn’t the one who caused the cataclysm. I believe the machine was responsible, and everything was connected to it. Korra was actually trying to destroy it and stop the catastrophe, but people misunderstood her intentions. In the end, Korra died believing she had stopped it, never realizing the truth. Maybe she was never the villain they thought she was, but someone who was trying to save everyone all along.
