Can you see the next song? 🪩 Pt 10 | Cameo vs Bell & James | 70s Mix Transition 🎶 Cameo — “I Just Want to Be” (1979) ➡️ Bell & James — “Livin’ It Up (Friday Night)” (1978) Two different approaches to late-70s dance music meet in this transition: Cameo’s unmistakable funk and the infectious Friday-night energy of Bell & James! 🔥 Cameo’s “I Just Want to Be,” from Secret Omen on Chocolate City Records, features the muscular bass and tight rhythmic arrangements that helped establish Larry Blackmon’s group as a funk powerhouse. Bell & James bring a different personality with “Livin’ It Up (Friday Night),” released on A&M Records. Written by Leroy Bell and Casey James, the record became a dance-floor favorite with its bright, uplifting sound and irresistible weekend spirit. 🎚️ Here’s where the mixing gets interesting. Both recordings are running at approximately 118.9 BPM in djay, but their musical arrangements have different textures. Rather than relying on tempo matching alone, the transition uses the records’ rhythmic structure to connect Cameo’s heavier funk groove with Bell & James’ lighter, celebratory sound. The production video shows djay’s mixing interface with Manual FX and EQ controls, including Echo, Reverb and Lowpass options. These provide ways to shape the balance between recordings while working through the transition. 💡 A useful mixing idea: Two songs can share the same tempo and still feel very different. Choosing the right phrase and listening to how their rhythms complement each other can matter more than the BPM number. 📻 Back when these records were new… Radio was a major part of how funk, disco and soul traveled between cities. Chicago’s WDAI entered its Disco DAI period in 1979. New York’s WBLS and WKTU, Philadelphia’s WDAS, Detroit’s WGPR, Miami’s 96X, and Los Angeles’ KUTE 102 were part of the radio landscape connecting dance-music audiences. The records themselves came from an era of extended vinyl mixes, analog studios and reel-to-reel tape. Those tools shaped the work of professional DJs long before digital beat synchronization existed. 📱 This transition was created entirely inside Algoriddim djay on an iPad. The technology makes it possible to experiment with tempo, phrasing and effects, while the musical choices remain part of the hands-on experience. And here’s what makes this ongoing journey special: every new record becomes the starting point for the next transition, continuing the musical chain that began in the Old School R&B series. Cameo brings the funk. Bell & James bring Friday night. Where will the music go next? 🎶🪩 #DjayTransition #Cameo #BellAndJames #70sDisco @djay - The #1 DJ App - @laidback.fred
