no YOU just don't get it. If we have it so good, why do we have a teacher shortage? Why do an overwhelming amount leave the profession within the first 5 years? There is not a day in the week that I don't work. 7 days a week. Teaching all day requires focus on the students. So we have to plan in our OWN TIME else there would be nothing to teach. On average, we work an extra 23.6 hours a week unpaid. How are we meant to show up for the kids when we are not even being given the breathing space to show up for ourselves?

Teachers are leaving. Most schools are using unqualified teachers or tas as it's cheaper and there is a staffing crisis. How about we look at the reasons they are leaving? I work 50-60 hours a week and the majority of that is outside my contracted hours. I don't see Aldi staff doing the same for free? Manage workload, that's what you need to be looking at, not pooh poohing an idea that might help.

Only people who have never worked in schools will agree with this. Working in a school is mentally and physically exhausting!

teachers would do well to return to a real curriculum, ditch all the fluffy stuff that confuse them and the kids, and just teach. for kids who cannot learn the academic stuff get them in workshop srttings, farm settings or practical settings of sorts, what them thrive, maybe, teachers are not the only tired career, the working cohort is knackered ! to few resources too many people !

As a teacher, I don’t currently work 5 days a week, I work 7. I may only be in the building 5 days a week, but teaching has no set hours

It's not four days a week, it's four days in class and one day administration as teachers have taken over the role social workers educational support et cetera

I’ve worked from 8am-6pm every day this week as I just don’t have enough hours in the day to do the job properly. I’m only paid until 3! 15 hours unpaid overtime - nobody else would do it! It’s 4 classroom days and a day of admin, instead of 3 hours a week allocated for admin and 15 hours unpaid overtime… Get your facts right Farage!

Nigel I am a secondary school teacher in the East Midlands. I would like to invite you to spend the day with me in my classroom teaching and marking. Please have an opinion when you’ve experienced it first hand. Reply to this comment and we’ll make it happen.

I won't be lectured on work ethic by an MP who doesn't show up to Parliament and doesn't hold constituency surgeries... that is the equivalent of me not turning up to class and not bothering to mark work because I have 'better things to do'.

Clueless about teachers workload. They wouldn’t be having that day off - it’d be spent marking, creating lesson plans, writing reports and one hundred other things.

I work 4 days per week as a post primary teacher and I work just as hard and provide the same example and experience for children as my 5 day colleagues. Your argument is completely invalid.

The proposal isn't that teachers will "only work four days per week". It is that teachers will have one working day per week to do all the admin tasks needed (planning, assessment etc). In no other job do you need to work outside of your contracted hours to go to work to actually do your job! I have been teaching for 12 years. I am also a mum. I have gone part time so that I can do school work on my weekdays off, in order to spend time with my own children at the weekend!
