@melissaskavinska: The conversation surrounding Elena Kostyleva has taken another turn. Anton Sikharulidze, head of the Russian Figure Skating Federation, has publicly urged Elena’s mother, Irina Kostyleva, to take a step back from her daughter’s training process and place greater trust in Evgeni Plushenko. Sikharulidze described Elena as an “incredibly talented” skater, but said that while her mother is extremely involved in her career, during training the coach needs to be the number-one authority. He also suggested that Irina should comment less on the training process through social media, saying the federation trusts Plushenko’s methods and wants him to be able to prepare Elena according to his own plan. It raises a much bigger question: where should the line be between parental involvement and a coach’s authority when developing a young elite athlete? Elena is one of Russia’s most talked-about young skaters, and the relationship between athlete, parent and coach continues to attract almost as much attention as her skating itself. I’m Melisa, founder of Inside Artistic Sports, where I translate and break down stories from Russian figure skating and rhythmic gymnastics for an English-speaking audience adding the context that often gets lost in translation. Want to understand the Russian system beyond the headlines? My digital guides explore how the system actually works, the culture behind it and the stories shaping these sports. Anerine :
All coaches have the authority, parents shouldn't be involved.. She it's so promising if she consistently having injuries.. But her mother must also stop attacking other skaters..
