Ángel Maturino Reséndiz (born Ángel Leoncio Reyes Recendis/Reséndiz; aliases including Rafael Resendez-Ramirez), August 1, 1959 – June 27, 2006, was a Mexican serial killer known as the “Railroad Killer.” He was linked to at least 15 murders across the U.S. in the 1980s–1990s, many near railroad tracks, involving blunt-force trauma, robbery, and sexual assault. He was executed in Texas for the 1998 murder of Claudia Benton. (Early Life) Born in Izúcar de Matamoros (or nearby San Nicolás Tolentino), Puebla, Mexico, into a rural, impoverished family. His father was largely absent and abusive toward his mother, Virginia; the parents never married. Virginia later remarried. Childhood was unstable: he was dropped on his head as an infant, witnessed a machete attack on his mother around age three, and was sent to live with relatives (mainly uncle Rafael Reséndiz, whose name he later used) from roughly age 6 until 11–12. Accounts conflict—some said he was spoiled; others alleged physical and sexual abuse. He was small, timid, a loner, sometimes violent toward peers, with limited education (~7th grade). He reported repeated sexual abuse (neighbor around age 8 and later), sniffed glue, endured beatings, and lived amid violence. Around 11–12 he left home permanently, lived on the streets with older boys involved in crime, and began drifting. His mother claimed mental disabilities from head injuries; family also referenced schizophrenia and paranoia. As a teen he illegally entered the U.S. (from ~1973–1976), worked as a migrant farm laborer, hopped freight trains, used many aliases, and was deported repeatedly. He had a long record for burglary, vehicle theft, assault, and immigration offenses. In Florida he received a 20-year sentence (paroled after ~6 years in 1985). His mother said he was gang-raped in a U.S. prison. He later had a common-law wife, Julieta Domínguez, and a daughter in El Rodeo, Durango. To some relatives he seemed ordinary or gentlemanly when home between periods of drifting and crime. (Path to Killing and Motives) First known/admitted killing was reportedly an unidentified homeless woman in Texas ~1986. Murders intensified 1997–1999 near railroad tracks. Victims were men and women of various ages; he used blunt objects found at scenes (rocks, hammers, etc.), sometimes lingered to eat, took items or cash, and checked IDs. Contributing factors included severe childhood trauma and abuse, substance use, a transient lifestyle with repeated deportations and resentment toward the U.S., and alleged paranoid schizophrenia. He developed religious delusions—believing he was a “man-angel” tasked by God with punishing sinners (linked to witchcraft, abortions, homosexuality, etc.). Practical motives included robbery, sexual gratification, anger, and power. He was not found legally insane; prosecutors argued he knew right from wrong, while defense experts cited schizophrenia and delusions. Arrest, Trial, and Execution DNA and fingerprints from the Benton murder linked him. He briefly made the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list in June 1999. His half-sister Manuela helped negotiate his surrender; he crossed the El Paso border on July 13, 1999, and was taken into custody. Tried in Houston for Claudia Benton’s capital murder, he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Convicted in May 2000 and sentenced to death, he later confessed to additional murders. On death row he maintained delusions of immortality as a man-angel. A judge ruled him competent in 2006. Executed by lethal injection on June 27, 2006, at Huntsville Unit (age 46). In his final statement he asked victims’ relatives for forgiveness, saying he allowed the devil to rule his life, and prayed “Lord, forgive me.” He was pronounced dead at 8:05 p.m. #truecrime #truecrimecommunity #unsolvedmysteries #truecrimestory #serialkiller
