@theniblack: “Sweethearts” absolutely broke my heart. Created by Sydney collective Flim Flam Studios for Sculpture by the Sea, the installation takes the familiar form of candy hearts and turns it into a memorial. Sixty heart-shaped graves represent women killed by violence in Australia this year, many by intimate partners. The inscriptions carry the language used to excuse and minimise violence. Words have consequences. What we dismiss, what we accept, and what we allow to pass without challenge matters. There is something devastating about using a symbol of affection to confront violence committed by people who are supposed to love us. Each heart represents a woman whose life should have continued. Among so many remarkable works along this coast, this one deserves time and attention of its own. “Sweethearts” by Flim Flam Studios: Omi McCurdie, Matty McCarron and Philippa Lysaght. #sculpturebythesea #flimflamstudios #sweethearts #endviolenceagainstwomen #gardentravel
