Typhoon Rosal Is Leaving, But This Wind Is Dangerous! Typhoon Rosal is leaving the Philippines, but its strong winds still reach provinces more than 1,400 kilometres from its center. And this is happening in the middle of what PAGASA says is likely to become a very strong El Niño, the one many now call the Super El Niño. If you live in Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Aurora, northern Quezon, the Polillo Islands, the Bicol Region, Romblon, Capiz, Iloilo or Negros Occidental, PAGASA has your area on today's list for strong to gale-force gusts. Rosal, known internationally as Typhoon Champi, is already north of Batanes and moving toward Japan. Most of the country is far from the storm's center. The wind you feel right now is still real. It comes from Rosal's outer circulation, which spreads far beyond the eye of the typhoon. Here is how far that reach goes. Iloilo City and Bacolod are both more than 1,400 kilometres from the center of Typhoon Rosal. That is almost twice the length of Luzon, which is about 740 kilometres at its longest. Their provinces are still on PAGASA's gust list today. All areas on PAGASA's strong to gale-force gust list for today, 24 October 2026: Batanes Babuyan Islands Ilocos Norte Aurora Northern Quezon Polillo Islands Bicol Region: Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, Sorsogon Romblon Capiz Iloilo, including Iloilo City Negros Occidental, including Bacolod Wind signals in PAGASA's latest bulletin: Signal No. 2: Batanes Signal No. 1: northern Cagayan including the Babuyan Islands, northern Ilocos Norte, northern Apayao Tie down loose roofing, keep away from the coast, and check the latest PAGASA weather update before you travel. The sea is more dangerous than the land. PAGASA warns of waves up to 7 metres high off northern Batanes, and a gale warning is up for the seaboards of Northern Luzon. Sea travel there is risky for all vessels, so small boats should stay in port. Why does this matter during El Niño? PAGASA gives an 81 percent chance of a very strong El Niño between October 2026 and January 2027, with El Niño conditions likely to last into the first half of 2027. PAGASA says fewer tropical cyclones are expected in an El Niño, but some can still reach typhoon or super typhoon strength. Rosal did. It entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility as a super typhoon. Champi is also the 10th storm this Pacific season to reach super typhoon strength, double the long-term average, and one forecaster points to El Niño as the main driver, because it lets storms form farther east with more time to grow. On land, El Niño means the opposite problem: less rain. NDRRMC reports that 109 localities have declared a state of calamity because of El Niño, and the government is preparing for what news reports call the Super El Niño. So one week we get a typhoon, and the next we may be back to watching our dams and rice fields dry out. There is good news in the Rosal forecast. By tomorrow, only Batanes and the Babuyan Islands stay on the gust list as Rosal weakens and moves away from the Philippines. Is your province on the list? Tell me in the comments, and follow for the next PAGASA update on Typhoon Rosal, the next bagyo, and the Super El Niño.
