The richest man on Earth is now the biggest known donor of the 2026 midterms, and Elizabeth Warren is calling it “a purchase order.” Elon Musk has given more than $276 million since July to Republican-aligned groups ahead of the November 3 elections, according to reporting cited in the articles. A spokesperson for Musk’s America PAC said his total political giving this cycle has reached $366 million. The biggest chunk, $158 million, went to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC backing Republican Senate candidates. Another $76 million went to America PAC, which Musk launched in 2024 and which is focused on conservative voter turnout. He also gave $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC supporting Texas Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, $10 million to the Republican Governors Association, and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association. Warren criticized the spending by saying, “The richest man on earth dropped nearly $300 million to buy himself a Congress. That’s not democracy. That’s a purchase order.” Musk’s supporters and conservative groups argue the donations are legal political speech and necessary to compete in a system where major donors and super PACs operate on both sides. America PAC spokesperson Andrew Romeo said the investments help Republicans “get its message out” and “defy history.” Critics argue that donations of this scale give billionaires outsized influence over elections and policy. The debate goes back years, especially since super PACs became a dominant force in American politics, allowing unlimited independent spending as long as groups do not directly coordinate with campaigns. Musk had said in 2025 that he planned to spend “a lot less” on politics, but his latest giving puts him at the center of the fight for control of Congress. Do you think billionaire political spending is free speech, or does it give the ultra-rich too much power?
