@ikeepitvndercover: In my opinion, MT is a huge case of wasted potential. I was genuinely interested in Rudeus’s journey of personal growth and wanted to see how he would change as a person. However, the more I watched, the more disturbing his behavior became. The fact that he is mentally over 40 makes his actions even more uncomfortable, and learning about the disturbing details from the original web novel made it even harder for me to take his character seriously. Yes, Rudeus does develop in certain ways, and there are moments when he genuinely seems like he’s becoming a better person. However, his growth feels inconsistent when so many of his questionable traits remain, such as his obsession with underwear and his inappropriate behavior toward underage girls. I understand that the point is to show an imperfect person learning from his past, but there’s a difference between portraying a flawed character and making the audience sit through disturbing behavior without feeling like he has truly learned from it. What frustrates me most is that MT has so much potential to tell a genuinely compelling story about redemption and becoming a better person. The world-building, plot, and overall premise are interesting, which makes it even more disappointing when Rudeus’s behavior takes away from the story. I can acknowledge that he improves in some areas without pretending his other actions are any less disturbing. For me, his development never fully makes up for his behavior, and that’s why I believe MT is a case of wasted potential. It could have been an incredible story about personal growth, but I feel like it falls short of what it could have been. I feel like a lot of the people who call this show peak are immature and haven’t fully processed Rudeus’s character or the disturbing things he does. They focus so much on the world-building and his development that they overlook the bigger issues with his character. I gave this anime a chance, watched over two seasons, and came to my own conclusion. I’m not supporting MT ever again, and I’m not giving it another chance. I’ve seen enough to know it’s not for me.
