It’s International Snow Leopard Day! Thanks to Keeper Ricky we’re able to give our followers an up close look at Sarka, our snow leopard cub, exploring the Himalayan Highlands. Our snow leopards’ naturalistic exhibits provide opportunities for exploring, climbing, and other species’ appropriate behavior. The zoo has had more than 80 snow leopard births to date and participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Snow Leopard Species Survival Plan, a cooperative breeding program designed to enhance the genetic viability of the species. At the @Wildlife Conservation Society we are working to secure critical snow leopard habitats and maintain connectivity across High Asia. Mongolia is home to the world’s second-largest wild snow leopard population. Our WCS Mongolia team recently fitted two adult males with GPS collars in the Gobi, at the eastern edge of the species’ range. The collars will help us demonstrate the importance of a critical mountain corridor connecting protected areas, understand how snow leopards move through this landscape, and provide the scientific evidence needed to secure its long-term protection. #snowleopard #cat #bronxzoo #catsoftiktok - @thebronxzoo
