Mathew Hargreaves, 48, the former headteacher of King’s Northway Primary Academy in Liverpool, has been sentenced to two years and one month in prison at Liverpool Crown Court. He downloaded child sexual abuse images across categories A, B and C, including the most serious category. He also admitted taking an indecent image of a child himself. A man entrusted with leading a primary school. Absolutely sickening. He initially tried claiming the images had ended up in his possession by accident. Police proved otherwise and described his excuses as lies. He was immediately suspended following his arrest. Alongside his prison sentence, he has been given a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and must remain on the sex offenders register for ten years. One victim described feeling sick and constantly on edge, questioning why he took the photograph and worrying about whether he had shared it. That fear is heartbreaking. These are real children whose abuse and distress deserve to remain at the centre of this story. The Echo also reported on 10 September that a woman had been arrested in connection with the investigation. Twenty-five months. Personally, I find that sentence hard to stomach. Parents place enormous trust in the people responsible for their children.
