Koumas has to be considered for the starting XI against Brighton. His aggressive pressing, intensity off the ball and ability to disrupt the opposition’s build-up are exactly what we need against a side that wants to dominate possession and play through the lines. What stands out even more is how much better Wirtz appears when they play together. Koumas’ movement, directness and willingness to press create space, disrupt defensive structures and give Wirtz more freedom to operate between the lines. Instead of forcing Wirtz to create everything himself, Koumas gives him another outlet and makes our attacking transitions more dangerous. We also need three midfielders. Brighton are comfortable using positional rotations, creating passing triangles and exploiting spaces between the lines. Going into this game with only two central midfielders risks losing control of the middle, especially when our full-backs push forward. A midfield three would give us better numerical balance, improve our counter-pressing, protect the defence and help us win second balls. The tactical priority should be to match Brighton’s intensity, disrupt their rhythm and attack the spaces they leave behind. Koumas’ pressing, combined with a balanced midfield three, gives us a clear route to doing that while allowing Wirtz to influence the game in more dangerous areas. This is about more than giving Koumas a chance; it is about selecting a structure that brings the best out of Wirtz while giving us the midfield control and pressing intensity required to compete with Brighton.
