KITALE In 1930, Kitale was a tiny place. It had a District Commissioner's house, a wooden post office and one general store. The nearest railway station was in Eldoret, sixty miles away. In the rains, ox wagons got stuck on the roads. Still, settlers kept coming. Kenya had been advertised at the Wembley Exhibition in 1924, and land prices rose fast. Around 1928, the railway reached Kitale. Trains ran three times a week. The town grew quickly. Machinery firms, oil companies and banks all set up shop. A grocer and a chemist opened too. The main street ended in a row of Indian dukas selling cheap, bright cloth. Fridays were the busiest. Farmers came to shop and collect wages. The hotel lounge filled with people taking tea. It was the best day to meet friends. The new Kitale Hotel was the town's pride. It had a big fireplace, brick bungalows with hot water, and its own electricity. An older story comes from 1954. A boy met Mr. Walsh, a farmer of about ninety. As a young cabin boy, Walsh had jumped ship at Mombasa. He became an ivory hunter near Mount Elgon. He kept a huge flintlock musket from an Arab slaver. Walsh said the name Kitale came from "Quitale", an Arab name. When he first came, a giant thorn boma still stood on the town's site. Slavers had held captives there before marching them to the coast. Large parts of Trans Nzoia were almost empty then. Slave raiding, disease and unrest were the likely causes. Source: Christine Nicholls, Old Africa Magazine.
