Kibutu was 32 when he caused a collision on Golden State Boulevard, resulting in the death of a 16-year-old passenger and injuries to three others. He was convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in 2013 but failed to appear for sentencing, leading to an arrest warrant. After over a decade as a fugitive, Kibutu was apprehended in Nairobi on September 9, 2026, following an extradition request from the US. The extradition process took four weeks. He has since been transferred to US authorities and transported to California to face justice for the fatal incident.
