To leave everything behind after 23 years together, from one day to the next, for a woman you have known for barely five weeks, despite so many people in your inner circle warning you about her… Sometimes I wonder how long the idealization of a person can last once reality begins to contradict the image you have created of them. Perhaps, in the beginning, it is the fascination of something new, the thrill of the unknown, or the feeling that you have found something truly special. Perhaps you ignore everything that doesn't fit the picture in your mind and cling even more tightly to it when others try to warn you. But what happens when the initial euphoria fades? When you suddenly begin to notice things you didn't want to see before? When you start asking yourself questions you never wanted to ask in the beginning? That's when things get difficult. Because eventually, it is no longer just about the other person. It is also about your own decision. About 23 years you left behind. About the people who might have been right all along. And about the realization that perhaps you have become so caught up in something that it is nothing like what you imagined it to be. And when pride and a big ego come into play, finding your way back becomes even harder. Not necessarily because you fail to recognize that something is going wrong, but because admitting to yourself and to others that you were wrong can be incredibly difficult. Sometimes the hardest part isn't realizing that you made the wrong decision. It's finding the courage to admit it to yourself. Because when you give up your entire life as you've known it for something new, there may eventually come a point when you have to decide not only what you want to hold on to, but also whether your pride is truly worth more than everything you've lost. 🖤
