The Three Wise Monkeys are a famous Japanese symbol representing the principle of “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” They are Mizaru, who covers his eyes; Kikazaru, who covers his ears; and Iwazaru, who covers his mouth. They are famously depicted in a 17th century carving at Nikkō Tōshō-gū Shrine in Japan. There is also a lesser known fourth monkey, Shizaru, who represents “Do no evil,” often depicted crossing his arms or covering his abdomen. I chose to focus on the original three monkeys for my interpretation. In my version, my character twist this philosophy into something much more sinister. See No Evil: Keeping others blind to the wrongdoing, allowing it to continue without question. Hear No Evil: Dismissing the voices of reason and morality, listening only to what justifies your own actions. Speak No Evil: Forcing others into silence to hide your wrongdoings and prevent the truth from coming out. What was once a symbol of avoiding evil becomes a twisted excuse to enable it, protect it, and keep it hidden. #oc #arttrend #fyppp #animation #speedpaint
