This nuclear reactor just turned toxic mercury into real gold. A startup called Marathon Fusion pulled it off by recreating the reaction that powers the sun. Here's how it works in plain English. Their fusion reactor shoots out a stream of tiny, super-fast particles. These particles then slam into mercury and actually change the mercury atom, and a few days later they've turned into gold. But the craziest part is what else this same machine can make. It can also create rare medical isotopes, which are basically radioactive ingredients that doctors use to find and kill cancer cells from the inside. Millions of lives depend on them, but they're actually very hard to make, and demand has exploded. And the old reactors that can make them can't meet the demand. Most of these reactors are decades old, and they also split uranium, which leaves behind dangerous radioactive waste. Marathon's machine works differently, so they don't have to split anything. They can shoot particles 10 times harder. So they can create isotopes that the old ones couldn't. Marathon's reactor has already started producing them, turning zinc into radioactive copper that's used to treat cancer. So this means these treatments could go from rare, very hard to get and very expensive to something every hospital could offer.
