It’s in Fez, Morocco. It was founded by Fatima Al Fihri who was born in Tunisia but migrated to Fez, Morocco at an early age. The Al Qarawyin University in Fez is also the University that issued the first medical degree in the World giving a license to practice medicine.

è errato quella marocchina non può essere considerata un università in quanto manca lo statuto e il programma di studio per lo studentato, in questo senso e più antica di un secolo quella di medicina di Salerno, la vera università con tutti i requisiti al mondo e quella di Bologna che è ancora attiva

È assolutamente sbagliato. Una scuola religiosa non è una università, anzi, è proprio l’esatto contrario. Bologna è la prima università fondata nel mondo occidentale, a Palazzo Poggi, nel 1088.

Bologna is the oldest if you consider the actual modern day concept of a university, also the first laic institution to do so, al qarawyyn was still a madrasa on its core, just like higher instruction was a monopoly of the Catholic Church in medieval European society.

I don’t agree. If we consider the meaning we give to the term “university” today, the University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is generally recognised as the oldest university in the world. The Moroccan institution, Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859, was originally established as a mosque and religious centre of learning, rather than a university in the modern sense.
