@classifiedeast: On 8 November 1933, Afghanistan’s King Mohammad Nadir Shah was shot dead during a school prize-giving ceremony in Kabul. His assassin was Abdul Khaliq, a teenage Hazara student at Nejat High School. Khaliq was reportedly seeking revenge for the execution of Ghulam Nabi Charkhi, a prominent supporter of former King Amanullah Khan, who had been killed on Nadir Shah’s orders in 1932. The assassination ended Nadir Shah’s four-year reign. Khaliq was arrested, tortured and publicly executed. Members of his family and alleged accomplices also faced severe reprisals. Nadir Shah’s son, Mohammad Zahir Shah, succeeded him, beginning a reign that would last four decades. For some, Abdul Khaliq became a symbol of resistance against royal repression.
