bottom line:
their marriage, their boundaries.b you don't get to decide how they feel about secrets. and its green frankly not healthy to keep them in marriages.
you're in charge of your privacy. you have a right to it and with that, the responsibility to protect it. if their rules are 'no secrets', then you don't get to expect it

first of all, i am not their friend, i am their parent. whether we are married or divorced, my children know that if they tell me something, I will be telling their dad. I keep nothing from my husband, ever

Your individual relationship with either parent does not take priority over the relationship between husband and wife. That is true for your parents marriage and your own marriage. You are asking your mom’s husband to keep a secret from his wife and that drives a wedge between their relationship. Your Dad’s priority is to his wife and your Moms should be to her husband. Their priority as a couple should be to the children, but not as individuals, if they are forced to choose placing anyone (even the kids) above their spouse.

I am a mom of two adult children and unless it has anything to do with money I would definitely keep the secret. There are certain situations moms are better at and vice a versa. I am an adult I don’t define myself as a wife I am very capable of helping my kids and if they knew you would share with your spouse then neither one of you will know something that is important to your child. However, if it’s something I feel my husband has to know I would tell him but he would not be able to tell our child

They are divorced but dad might not want the liability of what he might hear. I think any adult can say no to hearing secrets they don’t feel comfortable hearing and keeping.

wrong question--not do adult children deserve privacy. Is it okay to ask someone to keep a secret from their spouse?
As a mom, I will keep a non-catastrophic secret *for a while*. As a person, I will keep it *unless he asks* at which point I will say 'I've been asked bot to tell you anything'. Hes never pushed that, but ultimately he and I agree we have the right to push it.
But thats us. Im general, this is about marriage boundaries more than child privacy, I think

not even just adult children but friends and family members in general. if the secret has nothing to do with the spouse or impacts their lives i think it’s fair to ask for privacy. i don’t understand why you have to be that codependent with your spouse that you can’t show anyone else loyalty or privacy. adult children deserve the same respect. hell i think teenagers deserve privacy. is my first question going to be “why don’t you want your other parent to know?” yes. but outright letting your child know they have no one safe to talk to? fck that

My guess is the dad hesitated because Mom is, and has always been the default parent and he is fully aware he wouldn’t have known how to handle (insert potential life problem…aka the secret). Without consulting with his wife. Not surprising. 🙄 I doubt it had anything to do with protecting the sanctity of his marriage. Mom on the other hand is probably used to be being the sole advice giver and problem solver.
