@noorababy.app: Leaving the hospital with a newborn is overwhelming enough, and then there’s the paperwork. If you’re wondering what to do after your baby is born in the US, this is the newborn checklist nobody hands you, and a few of these have deadlines that start the day your baby arrives. So before the sleepless nights hit, here are the 6 things worth sorting out. (Quick note: we say “her” throughout just to keep it readable, but all of this applies to boys too.) 1) Birth certificate, filled out at the hospital, it’s your baby’s official identity record. Spell every name and date carefully, since corrections later mean extra fees and a long wait. 2) Social Security number, request the newborn SSN on that same hospital form. Almost everything else, insurance, taxes, savings accounts, needs it, so it’s the domino the rest depend on. 3) First pediatrician visit, book it before discharge; this newborn doctor visit usually happens 3 to 5 days after birth, where weight, feeding and jaundice get checked while they’re still easy to handle. 4) Add baby to your health insurance, here’s the big ticking clock: roughly 30 days for employer plans, 60 for Marketplace. Miss the deadline to add your baby to insurance and those newborn hospital charges can fall on you. 5) Taxes, claiming your baby as a dependent can seriously boost your refund, and the Child Tax Credit can be worth up to $2,000. That SSN has to come first. 6) Your own postpartum check-up, the appointment that always gets overlooked. Recommended within the first 3 weeks, it’s about your healing and mental health, because you matter here too ❤️ The silver lining? Most of this new baby paperwork can be started right from your hospital bed. This is general guidance, not medical, legal or tax advice. Deadlines, rules and amounts vary by state, insurance plan and tax year, so check your plan, your state’s vital records office and current IRS rules. We’ve done our best to keep this current, if your experience differs, let us know 🙏 Sources: the Social Security Administration (SSA), Healthcare.gov, the IRS, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). 📌 Save this for after the birth 👶 Send it to an expecting parent who needs this info Which one caught you by surprise?
