I went through something similar with my dad after he had a stroke. I remember one time he needed to use the bathroom, so I took him and helped him. He kept apologizing to me over and over, and I was doing everything I could to hold back my tears. It was heartbreaking to see him like that. This was the man I used to be afraid of as a little boy, the same man I always felt safe around because I knew he would protect me.
