Did Suliman Carrim’s Lawyers Throw Him Under the Bus? After Defending His Madlanga Commission No-Show and Saying ‘We’ll Deal With the Consequences’, Carrim Now Remains Behind Bars as Two More Vehicle-Theft Cases Are Added North West businessman Suliman Carrim’s legal troubles have deepened following his arrest at OR Tambo International Airport, his continued detention while awaiting a bail decision, and the addition of two further cases involving the alleged attempted theft and smuggling of vehicles. The developments have renewed questions about his legal strategy, particularly after his lawyer defended him for failing to appear at the commission and told the Madlanga Commission that the defence would deal with whatever consequences followed. “The commission will do what they do and we’ll deal with the consequences,” Advocate Kameel Premhid told the commission. At the time, Carrim’s legal team maintained that the businessman was not avoiding accountability and that medical advice explained his failure to appear. Carrim was subsequently arrested on 15 October and appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, where his bail proceedings were postponed to 28 October, leaving him in custody. The latest development came after the Commission’s Recommendations Task Team added Carrim as an accused in two existing cases involving the alleged attempted theft of two vehicles belonging to Absa. According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the vehicles were allegedly destined for Malawi after being intercepted at the Beitbridge border post on 22 July. Investigators allege that fraudulent bank documentation was arranged after the required authorisation for taking the financed vehicles across the border was not obtained. Carrim is expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court in connection with the cases. #sulaimancarrim #MadlangaCommission #PKTT #NewsUpdate
