@watsandwellsmom: Raw and real truth when it comes to the foster care system coming from someone who grew up as a foster family #fyp #fostercare #cps #fosterfamily
Teacher here. I’m shocked by how bad things have to get before the kids are taken away

My cousin lost her 3 kids and then I saw so much working as a nurse. I’m soooo anti-reunification. Yes, there is the occasional happy story. You should not get multiple chances to f up your children.

I think the missing conversation is that the state is unwilling to invest in people the way that they need to for them to actually change. Are there people who do not want to change, yes. When we are talking about generational trauma, it takes years of therapy in a safe environment which caused tens of thousands of dollars that the state is not willing to invest in people and so it’s a cycle of these issues. I think that a lot of people in the comment section in you failed to understand that part of it. As someone who group and foster care, used to be a child welfare advocate for 10 years, no contact with my own parents. Went on my own healing journey that cost me today 25K. Well, I appreciate that. I was willing to make the sacrifices necessary to put myself in the position that I have. It was extremely hard and it shouldn’t have been that hard. I think that a kind person would believe that every human is deserving of the dignity to heal. The reality, however, is that our system is not set up that way and it’s easier for you guys to blame the people who are hurt beyond repair.

I am a very much Miss Rachel type of person and I worked in corrections. People had to tell me numerous times like you’re seeing too much of a good person in this person. Who’s not a good person if that makes sense. And it took me a long time to figure out that it was me problem and that I was projecting Goodwill onto people that didn’t deserve it.

you can look them dead in the face and say exactly what caused them to lose their kids and they'll shrug. you beat them. shrug. you starved them. shrug. your home is uninhabitable. shrug. they cannot and will not get it.

Exactly! My partner’s BM has called CPS on us a hundred times on false claims and every time they’ve showed up, checked everything out, and agreed with us it was ridiculous he kept doing this. There is NO world where the kids are taken away on false pretenses like they claim

I was taken into foster care at 13 and I can honestly say that if I went back to the home situation I was removed from, I wouldn’t have made it to 18…Reunification is always beautiful when it’s done correctly but it isn’t ALWAYS the answer.

As some who is in social work and taught parenting education classes to people who lost custody of their kids I couldn’t agree more.

Teaching did the same thing to me as far as parents and parenting. When I had my son, someone asked me “Do you feel like you have more grace for the parents now that you are one?” And I said “No, if anything, I have less.” Very few of my parenting opinions I had formed through teaching changed when I became a parent.

I've always said that if they fast-tracked the adoption process in 90% of cases—6 to 12 months maximum—then more families would be willing to open up their stable homes to kids in that situation; but instead, the parents keep getting rewarded with chance after chance, seven or eight years and five to six foster homes before termination in some cases, and it messes up the kids.

That’s not abnormal. I forget what it’s called in psychology but yeah the more u go thru, the harder it is to empathize w people who don’t get themselves thru shit bc u had to and did it

As a current foster parent, this is so true. With our current placement, I tried so hard to help her parents initially but time and time again they proved they just couldn’t get it together and it’s always someone else’s fault.

As someone who was saved by the system and watched my beautiful mom take all the DV classes and had social workers help her get a job, divorce and restraining orders. I’m grateful everyday that my mom and I get to live and be free. She got me back in less than a year.

That’s why I was so pissed about ramaswamys depiction of Amy Acton, a foster kid who against all odds, clawed her way out to became a doctor and is running for governor.

From a former foster kid you’re absolutely correct and I wish more people knew what they were talking about when they bring this up.

I was adopted out of foster care. My biological parents literally popped children out for state benefits and that’s it. I do not talk to them. I forgive them for me, but will never be open to a relationship with them. I got married and didn’t invite them. I’m pregnant right now and they have no clue. They had years to figure it out and they still couldn’t get sober or get their lives on track. I have zero sympathy for them. Maybe a little empathy for them, but I also look at their lives and know I had a harder childhood and never let it be an excuse to ruin my own life, or fuck up my children.

I want to do foster care so bad but I have four young kids and I was worried how it would affect them so I love your series. It makes me feel better that if we did it,it wouldn’t completely traumatize them.
