Nikola Tesla (July 10, 1856 – January 7, 1943) was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical and mechanical engineer, and futurist. He is best known for developing the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system, which won the "War of Currents" against Thomas Edison's direct current (DC) system and powers the world today. • Birth: Born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, Austrian Empire (modern-day Croatia), to a Serbian Orthodox priest father and an inventively inclined mother. • Education: Studied at the Technical University in Graz, Austria, and attended lectures at the University of Prague, though he never graduated. • Early Career: Worked at the Budapest Telephone Exchange and the Continental Edison Company in Paris before moving to the United States in 1884. Arrival in America and the "War of the Currents" • Edison: Immigrated to New York in 1884 and briefly worked for Thomas Edison at Edison Machine Works before resigning over a dispute regarding pay and technical philosophy. • Westinghouse Partnership: Partnered with engineer and businessman George Westinghouse to license and promote his AC polyphase system. • AC vs. DC: Proved that alternating current could transmit high voltages over long distances much more efficiently and safely than Edison’s direct current (DC). • Major Milestones: Supplied the electrical system that lit the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (Columbian Exposition) and built the first large-scale AC hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls in 1896. Key Inventions and Innovations • AC Induction Motor: Created a motor running on a rotating magnetic field. • Tesla Coil: Developed in 1891, a high-frequency resonance transformer circuit used in radio and lighting. • Wireless Concepts: Laid foundational work for radio communication, remote control (telautomaton), radar concepts, and fluorescent lighting. • Unrealized Projects: Conducted high-voltage wireless power experiments in Colorado Springs (1899) and attempted to build the global Wardenclyffe Tower on Long Island, which was abandoned due to a lack of funding. Later Years and Legacy • Hardships: Suffered a major laboratory fire in 1895 and experienced financial struggles and growing reclusiveness later in life. • Death: Passed away alone on January 7, 1943, at the Hotel New Yorker in New York City at the age of 86. • Honors: Awarded the AIEE Edison Medal in 1916. In 1960, the General Conference on Weights and Measures named the SI unit of magnetic flux density the tesla (T) in his honor.
