@foodietravellersguide: After 3 weeks in Athens, these are the 4 local taverns we’d fly back for 🇬🇷 Everyone knows Athens’ famous ‘secret’ taverns, but these 4 felt like discovering a completely different side of the city… Here’s exactly where we went, what we ordered and what we paid 👇 1️⃣ To Koutouki Tou Thoma 📍 Pitheou 106, Neos Kosmos A hidden garden, no menu and an invitation straight into the kitchen to choose your food! This was one of the most memorable dining experiences we had in Athens. 🍽️ What we ordered: Meatballs €8 | Chicken with orzo €8 | Boiled greens (horta) €4 | ½L wine €3.50 💡 The dishes change depending on what’s cooking that day, so go with an open mind! 2️⃣ O Tsobanakos 📍 Anakreontos 2, Kaisariani A neighbourhood taverna that’s been around for roughly 70 years. The lamb chops were some of the best we had in Athens! 🍽️ Our recommendation: Charcoal-grilled lamb chops €16 per portion (or €50/kg). The plate shown in the video is one portion! 💡 This one is tucked away from the main tourist areas, so save the address before heading there. 3️⃣ Aschimopapo (The Ugly Duckling) 📍 Ionon 61, Ano Petralona Founded in 1968, this hidden courtyard taverna felt like we’d stumbled into a big Greek family lunch. 🍽️ What we ordered: • Beef cooked in a clay pot with cheesy chips €15 • Aubergine salad €5 • Oven-baked tomatoes, chilli peppers & feta €6 1/2 L wine €5 💡 Come with someone you can share a few traditional dishes with, and don’t rush your meal. 4️⃣ To Kapileio (Το Καπηλειό) 📍 Spintharou 30, Neos Kosmos No sign outside, just a doorway and a window. Inside, it’s wonderfully no-frills, with a husband and wife cooking and serving. 🍽️ What we ordered: Chicken souvlaki €10 Shrimp pasta €14 (huge portion!) 1/2L wine €5 💡 Allow plenty of time.
