@interstellarspac: The observable universe extends approximately 46.5 billion light-years from Earth in every direction. Although the universe is about 13.8 billion years old, its observable radius is much larger because space itself has expanded while the light was traveling toward us. The observable universe is not 46.5 billion light-years across—it is approximately 93 billion light-years in diameter. This is the estimated present-day distance between the most distant regions whose light has had time to reach us. The observable universe has no known physical edge or boundary. Its limit is the horizon beyond which light has not had enough time to reach Earth since the beginning of the universe. The universe beyond that horizon may extend much farther, possibly infinitely. Every galaxy we observe is seen as it was in the past. The farther away an object is, the longer its light has traveled to reach us. When we observe distant galaxies, we are looking back billions of years into cosmic history. The expansion of the universe also means that some of the most distant galaxies are now much farther away than they were when their light began traveling toward us. Their light has been crossing an expanding universe for billions of years, allowing astronomers to study the cosmos as it existed in its early stages. Scientists estimate the observable universe contains hundreds of billions of galaxies, possibly even trillions of smaller galaxies. Each galaxy can contain millions or billions of stars, revealing the enormous scale of the cosmos we can observe. The exact number remains uncertain because many distant galaxies are too faint to detect individually. As the universe continues to expand, some distant regions are moving away from us so rapidly that light emitted there today may never reach us. This does not mean those regions are traveling through space faster than light; rather, space itself is expanding. It also means the observable universe is not necessarily the entire universe—it is only the part we can potentially observe.
