@antdaviscyber: @Joe Tidy didn't know what PHP was until the morning of his BBC interview. The internet told him to resign. I think the cyber industry got this one wrong. There's a Joe Tidy at every organisation, and it could just as easily have been me. #cybersecurity #techtok #joetidy #infosec #bbcnews

Agreed. He is a journalist and a good one at that. His job is not to know everything about tech, it is to explain news stories, find out about the things he needs to be able to report. I have worked in IT since '85, I know the name php, but only just. All sorts of things people don't know. OpenVMS anyone?

He's a reporter without a tech background, covering tech. Which is fine. His job is reporting. Not having heard of php does show a major gap in his knowledge. He doesn't need to be an expert but not even having heard of it shows a lack of knowledge in the field. He shouldn't need to quit, but maybe he should have better tech knowledge.

I saw his TikTok explaining himself. First and foremost, he’s a journalist. I’ve worked in IT for 18yrs, I’d heard the term PHP bandied around but had no idea of what & importance.

I totally agree that we should give those translating the deep technical for a broader audience some grace absolutely. But never hearing of PHP being in and around the industry as long as he has is mind boggling, I wouldn’t even classify that as technical.

I'm doing a cyber degree at the moment. No experience at all, I always worry if I'm wasting my time doing it and I'm in over my head being older now at 43. This made me feel a little bit better so thank you 👍

I have super super technical staff, fhat have designed, built and written a content delivery network for commercial cinemas. Have them explain it to even a tech literate audience? Not in a month of Sundays.

In an ideal world he would be technical as well as being able to communicate, but it's not necessary in the role he holds.

Someone explain to me how you can work on cyber security topics for 10 years and never come across to one of the pilar of cyber security ? Let's not bully the man for sure but let's be for real ?

Over 25 years ago a university lecturer in a lecture that I was in said, "there is no such thing as a computer expert."

Bravo 👏🏼 Well said, and great support for Joe. I'm telling my STEM mentees, human comms is a key skill for a future career in tech - especially with the rise of AI "doing the coding".

As a young engineer it was explained to me like this: There are two types of engineer in the world. Those that can tell you the exact chemical makeup of a jar of jam, all of the ingredients, the various interactions that give it taste, texture and aroma. Then there's the engineer who can open the lid. Which one do you need to make you a jam sandwich?

Being able to communicate it tech to greater audiences is a magic gift. Doesn’t matter what you knew before you cover it, it matters what you look up, understand and can transfer!

Exactly!!! There’s a lot of importance with explaining the tech to everyday people. That’s a skill that is as useful to IT as knowing what php means, coming from someone who writes php daily Monday through Friday. 💯

same as you 100% and share similar background in that i was software and then production support before moving into cyber. a hell of a lot of what I do is governance not technical at all. a lot of the guys I work with know have a spooky about the tech side but they are good cyber people who understand risk.

I SAY IT HOW I SEE IT :
We live in a world of technology that moves so fast as an IT person myself I am always learning it never stops. But to be fair as a reporter maybe he would have just done a quick self knowledge research on a subject or tech he is unsure of just so he has the basic understanding of it
