His early work included still lifes and historical subjects, but these elegant social scenes became his specialty. Look closely at the dresses. Bright highlights follow the raised folds, while deeper shadows describe where the fabric gathers, creases, or falls across a chair. The shifts in color make the material appear glossy, slippery, and almost touchable. He gives different surfaces distinct personalities, so a satin gown does not catch the light like upholstery, skin, or wood. The illusion comes from those relationships, not simply from painting everything in extraordinary detail. There’s another twist: many of these scenes look back to an earlier era.
