To be clear, it's not the cutting of the trees that was illegal, it's doing it before environmental review was completed that was illegal. Some paperwork got mixed up. If Google had waited three months, this would not be news.

Until companies get fined beyond the profitability, they’re just gonna keep doing stuff. There’s no incentive not to do it, the fine is built into the cost of business. Governments need to wise up and find them appropriately.
