Acute angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the iris suddenly blocks the eye’s drainage angle—the narrow area where the iris meets the cornea. This prevents aqueous humor, the clear fluid produced inside the eye, from draining normally. The video begins with aqueous humor circulating through the front of the eye and leaving through the open drainage pathway. As the angle closes, the outer edge of the iris moves forward and obstructs this exit. Fluid continues to be produced but can no longer drain effectively, causing pressure inside the eye to rise rapidly. The video ends with trapped fluid creating dangerously elevated pressure that threatens the optic nerve. Without prompt treatment, this pressure can cause permanent visual damage within a short period of time. Symptoms may develop suddenly and include intense eye pain, a red eye, blurred vision, rainbow-colored halos around lights, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Acute angle-closure glaucoma is a medical emergency—not a condition to monitor at home. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate emergency eye care. Treatment typically begins with medicines to lower eye pressure, followed by laser treatment to restore fluid movement and reduce the risk of another attack. Treatment can protect remaining vision, but vision already lost from optic-nerve damage may not be recoverable.
