a psychiatrist’s career advice for adhd brains, and it changes everything: adhd is not a focus problem 🤍 it’s an engagement problem — and that’s a huge difference. because once an adhd brain is genuinely engaged, it doesn’t just focus, it locks in and doesn’t stop until the thing is done. the trick is building a work life that creates that engagement on purpose. what tends to light up an adhd brain: high urgency, social and active work, real autonomy, and a clear sense of “winning.” what drains it: low-stimulation admin — the charts, the data entry, the endless forms. (sound familiar?) and the research backs this up — adhd job turnover is usually about environment mismatch and burnout, not a lack of commitment. so the reframe is this: it’s less a “you” problem and more an environment problem. instead of trying to become someone who tolerates monotony, engineer the environment to fit the brain — lean into interest-driven, autonomous roles, and use tools that hold your focus so self-managed work doesn’t fall apart (a focus timer like @Opal is part of that scaffolding). fix the environment, not yourself. 🎙️: @Johnny Gonzalez, MD 💬 what kind of work actually makes you lose track of time? save this if you’ve been blaming yourself for a bad fit. #adhdinwomen #adhdatwork #neurodivergent #adhdcareer latediagnosedadhd
